So, I love love love my Beast. But just for the heck of it, I used the 85mm for my own little mini session with my girl. And I was disappointed (again) so I'm thinking of once and for all to get rid of it.

But.... I'm still kind of itching for a longer reach, or 70mm will be my longest.

However, I'd like to really avoid spending more than $400-500 if possible....ok, maybe $600.. At the most.

Rumors are for some type of Nikon announcement on the 27th, but they are rumors for now. I'll believe it when I read it.

The Sigma 50-150 gets good press. It is 2.8 and DX though (if that is an issue for you)...

Longer glass that will not disappoint is usually expensive unfortunately. The 70-200VR f/2.8 is an obvious choice for your needs but blows your budget. The 180 f/2.8 might be had for close to it though. The 105VR is another possibility. But then, you could always throw caution to the winds and get the 200 mm f/2 :biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:

Is MF ok? Robert's been really talking up the old 105/2.5 AI and it does have a great reputation. See this thread. You can find used copies at keh for $150-$250. I know because I've been looking :tongue:

I'm actually going to agree with Tim on this one. I just picked up a good copy of a 105/2.5 for $90 at my local camera shop. Cosmetically it isn't pretty, but who cares? The optics are perfect. It's razor sharp, little CA, etc etc.

I was amazed that 85 and 105 was such a big gap in focal length, but it really is.

105 was my first thought. And the Sigma 50-150 as mentioned above. And the Tokina 50-135.

And I echo Connor's question-what don't you like about the 85?

Linda checkout the Tokina 50-135 2.8 it is an awesome lens, look at Raymond's photos at Fred M's

Are you just not liking the IQ of the 85mm f/1.8 or is it the focal length?
You may want to try the 85mm f/1.4. 105mm f/2 DC, 135mm f/2 DC.
I love my 85mm f/1.4. It is my workhorse for portraiture. However, I've been itching to pull the trigger on the 135mm f/2.0 DC. I certainly don't need it, but I certainly want it. It's NAS.

Not sure if you are interested in a zoom but a 70-300VR would fit nice into your lineup. You would probably just need to add a little cash once you sell your 85mm.
