I did a fresh install of Win 7 on my computer, and when I transferred my image files from my external hard drive over to my main computer, my .jpg files have morphed into .NEF files and now I can't view them on Window's built-in photo viewer. Is there a way to turn the .NEF files back into .jpg files?

I’m thinking that your “jpg” files were really raw files and that you had the RAW viewer installed.
I’d go to the Nikon site and get the RAW plugin for windows and you should be all set.

I don't think Windows has the ability to 'morph' .NEF files at all.

I'm with gryphon1911.... I'd say you've been raw files and you had the codec to display thumbnails from them on your old install. Go to your File Manager and look to see what they really are.... .NEF or .JPG.

I figured it out... the .jpg files were associated with Irfanview, which is one of my processors, and I had to make Windows Photoviewer the default program for opening those files.

All's well that ends well... thank you for your suggestions.
