July 4th Fun

Discussion in 'People' started by Terri French, Jul 6, 2018.

  1. July 4th started out cold here with a light frost on the ground, but it quickly warmed up to the high 80s. So if you see us at the parade in sweatshirts and wrapped in blankets, you’ll know why. We have a parade in our town and a huge fireworks display at night. They estimated 200,000 people attended the fireworks although our city and surrounding areas probably only have 100,000 population. We had to park away from both events and walk to the venues so I opted for my m4/3 gear. I even shot a few handheld fireworks and was surprised that the results weren’t worse. We had clear blue skies with very harsh sun....not great shooting conditions. During our picnic I used my Nikon gear. I'm grateful I have both the light and heavy kits.

I set my shutter speed for 1/5 second. The image stabilization worked pretty well. The photos would be nicer with a longer shutter speed, but I didn't want to carry a tripod with all the crowds.

I didn't add any saturation and only bumped the vibrance up to 6 on this one. I guess it really was this red.

  3. Wow, Terri, you have NOT lost the touch. These are great. And 200,000 people--yeah, Idaho is growing, fast. Love the vibrant last one.
It's been about 10+ years since I've been down your way.

You and Greg look great. I too love the music, especially bagpipes--so soul stirring for me.

Different from our parade, next year I think I’ll head down your way.
Those shots really capture the spirit of the 4th.

Saaweet shots Terri!, thanks for sharing. Hard to believe I Was last in Idaho back in 2002. My first year shooting digital. So long ago.

Really like the swing and water slide shots best I think.

Oh, deleted your dupes too. Happy shooting.

Those are terrific images, Terri - you all had a fabulous 4th!

  7. Great series! It shows the mood, environment, activities, etc.

Though I dislike the sound of one bagpipe, I enjoy the sound of a bagpipe band, the larger the better.

The Oly did well....with a little help from the photographer!(y)

I can’t imagine a better day for a July 4th celebration, with its crisp morning, blue skies, smiles, food and fireworks taking everyone away for special time.

  10. What a fun celebration you all had! Your fireworks shots are terrific -- well done, Terri!

  11. Thank you, Nick. We haven’t been up to your area for many years either!! Idaho is really 2 separate states, isn’t it? Southern Idaho is growing way too fast for my liking!!

  12. The Melaleuca Freedom Celebration in Idaho Falls really is the highlight of the year for the community. I hope the company continues to sponsor our celebration for many more years!!

  13. Thanks for taking care of the duplicate posts, Wade. At least you’ve been to Idaho. I’ve never been to Missouri, but plan to come there at some point. When my husband retires in a couple of years, I sure hope to see the parts of the country that we haven’t visitied before. I got my first digital camera in 2000. Hard to believe it’s been so many years.

  14. Thank you, Lyndee!! We did have a wonderful day.

  15. Thank you, Mike!! I’m like you, don’t enjoy one bagpipe much, but a band is great. I guess that’s usually because you hear a band for only a short time while they march by.

  16. Thank you, Karen!! The fireworks shots were so easy. I’ve had that E-M5 for 6 years and have never tried handholding that long. Who knew it would work so well!!

  17. Thank you, Don!! It was nice, not too hot, not too cold....just perfect!!

  18. Thank you, Connie!! The fireworks were so spectacular. We just loved them this year. A year ago they moved locations and the first year was pretty rough. The fireworks were great, but we were stuck in a traffic jam for 3 hours afterward. This year we parked further away and walked a couple of miles to the shooting location and it worked much better. We were home by 11:30 which wasn’t bad since the fireworks didn’t start till 10:00.

  19. A local Scottish Christmas Walk every year ends with a short concert presented by a mass band made up of all the bagpipe bands who participate in the walk. It really is an amazing sound (amazingly good or bad, I suppose, depending on whether you like it!).
