Been a Canon guy since I was 17, been away from photography few years for health reasons. Used to use 1D series with Canon. Anyone change from Canon to Nikon and have any feedback on the lenses with Nikon?

Im possibly looking to get this to start with

• D800E (2)
• 24 f/1.4G
• 85 f/1.4G
• 135 f/2
• 15 f/2.8 Zeiss
• 135 f/2 Zeiss

Thanks

Its a nice list to start with, only thing would be the Nikon 135mm F2 as it is a very old design with slow AF and there have been rumors for quite some time of a replacement coming. You might also want to consider picking up the Nikon 50mm F1.8 G as it is a great bargain and very sharp.

The two lenses that I have that show off the best capabilities of the D800e are the 60mm F2.8 G Micro and the 105mm F2.8 Micro VR, not wide open, they are macro lenses, but still, if you want the most detail and nuances I have found these two to be the best with my D800e.

I think I may opt to just go Nikon lenses to start off with

14-24 f/2.8G or 24 f/1.4G
85 f/1.4G
200 f/2G VR II

A friend of mine has the 14-24. It is a very nice lens; very sharp. You just need to be aware that the convex curvature of the front element does not allow for the use of filters.
There are filters for the lens...but they are very expensive. I love my 14-24 which I use without filters. I have not been frustrated by the lack of filters but YMMV.

These are among Nikon's best lenses so they would make for a great set. I agree with Andreas' comment regarding the 135/2, that's one length where Canon has the edge. Nikon's lens is aging. The Zeiss is fantastic but manual focus of course (I had both but prefer the Canon 135L). If you need that length, check out the 70-200 lenses, both the f/4 and f/2.8 VRII are excellent. The latter is in fact very close to the 200/2, you just give up some subject isolation.

Karen - Sorry for the misinformation; I was thinking about filters that screw into the front of the lens. I had seen one awhile back that offered an attachment with slide filters but the one Rick referenced looks like a more practical way to add a filter to the 14-24; at least from my perspective.

After looking at cost factors I may just start off with

• D800E
• 24 f/1.4G
• 85 f/1.4G
• 70-200 f/2.8G VR II (wanted the 200 chubby but rather use $$$ difference towards new loaded 27" iMac)

24 1.4 and 85 1.4 are absolutely amazing lenses for the D800E. I got great results with them. In my case, I don't care the "flexibility" of a zoom : plan frequent sensor cleaning though (frequent lens changes). You may consider replacing the 70-200 with the 300 F4 AF-S.
