I went to the pond with Patrick today, and got some pretty good shooting opportunities. Here are some samples. All shot with the D2H / 300 2.8 + 1.4 TC.

  2. Frank,

I'm coming over this weekend. Just need to get that 500mm :)

  3. Superb shots Frank. You and the 300 are becoming one:smile:

  4. Frank these are really good. I have tried my best over the past few days to get some flying ducks. I have had no luck at all. I need to find a spot that has light as well as ducks. Until I do I will just sit here and admire your wonderful shots.

How far are you from these guys when they take off? Do you have much time to acquire them? It seems to me when I have been in a place with ducks they come very fast...

    Jim,

They were about 150 to 200 feet away when they took off. You have about 1 to 2 seconds to get locked on and then 2 or 3 seconds of shooting time before they get too close. I like shooting Mallards because they are such colorful birds, and they are a challenge due to their flight speed. Typically they do fly in a relatively straight line though, so that helps.

Patrick and I have shot literally hundreds of these guys, and days like this one don't come all that often. We had the benefit of good light, and lots of targets to shoot, coming in a just the right angle. Not bad for a little lunch time break.

    Ben,

    1) Get the sun behind you and birds in front of you

    2) Get everything set just right

    3) Throw out bird seed.

    4) Shoot a lot.
