Keeping it old school: just got the Nikkor-H 85mm f/1.8 (AI-converted)...

    I've been looking for a decent low-light telephoto for my evening motorsports subjects...and got this off the big auction site:

    If these following two shots are any indication, this thing really can nail it at night:

    It's not a slouch in the day either:

    The lens's one Achilles heel has to be rough/jagged backgrounds (such as foliage), which aren't rendered all that smoothly:

    However, a smooth background stays buttery when wide-open:

    Now the real test will be at the racetrack in two days...and the night shots I've taken with it so far are promising.

    That background would be challenging for almost any lens. I don't think you can really blame the lens in this case.

    Keep shooting, it's a great lens!
