Does anyone have any experience with this converter? Will it autofocus with the 300 mm AFS f.4? It is only half price of the Nikon 2x converter.

Or should I forget about the 2x converters and get the 1.7x instead? I alredy have the 1.4 converter and it works like a charm with the 300 mm.

    I'll apreciate any inputs. Thanks.

This Converter works quite well with some long nikkors. AF, AF-S and VR are supported. It is very good with 300/4.5 ai, 50-300ai(!), 400/3.5 and 500/4ai. The dedicated TC-301 is nearly invisibly better.
On 300/f4 you get 600/f8 and need to stop down. AF will be rather slow and it makes absolutely no sense without a very good tripod (same for TC20, of course). Within this limitations you can get some very sharp pictures.

Thanks Carlsson. If I need to stop further down from f8 I would have to have plenty of light though or shoot high ISO.

By the way, with 2 stops loss wouldn't the f.4 become a 7.1?

    It' going to be f/8.

BTW, I've used the Nikon TC20E on the AF-S 300mm f/4 and if camera shake / vibration is taken care, images are pretty acceptable for the reach you get. I've read that the Kenko 2x TC will degrade image a lot unlike their 1.4x TC which is quite comparable with Nikkor's 1.4x TC.

Best compomise is the 1.7x TC.

Thanks Jason. I think I've decided on the 1.7x as I've seen a lot of great shots with that combination.
