I will do another monthly thread this year. I am not sure what I will concentrate on but I hope to finally do some astrophotography. I had hoped to do some the last couple of years but a move to Arizona complicated things.

A friend and I meet up at the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge last week. We had reservations for two mornings with a guide that runs trips to the edge of the reserve for photography or sightseeing. We were mostly in the coastal waterway that adjoins the refuge. We went there to photograph Whooping Cranes and found several family groups that were close enough to the boat to photograph with a long lens. Except for the pano these were all taken at 650mm on a full frame body (400 f2.8 with a 1.7 TC on a D5). These are just a taste of the trip. It was a lot of fun.

Beautiful set Larry. I really like that sunrise pano.

  4. Aransas is great ! Glad you had a good trip. I have seen a lot of sandhill cranes but never seen whooping cranes before.

Thanks. This was the first time I have seen whooping cranes. I have seen plenty of sandhills and I was a bit surprised that their behavior was different. The whooping crane families had their territory and would chase off any other cranes. I would love to go back again.

A few friends and I went to the Phoenix Zoo. It was my first visit there and it is a very nice zoo. It started as a rainy and very cloudy day and we had a few breaks in the clouds by the time we left. I actually like the overcast light over heavy sun. Here are a few images.

In mid March we have a special airshow at Luke Air Force Base. Normally the Air Force Thunderbirds perform but this year they had a conflict and the Navy's Blue Angels did the main part of the airshow. It was great and we watched it from our backyard. It would have been nice to be closer to the field, but the planes flew over our neighborhood quite often. It was a lot of fun.

Cool beans Larry - sometimes it's nice being just close enough you don't have to mingle with the crowds.

Thanks Gordon. You are right. The air show was over two days and the projection was over 450,000 folks would attend. It is a big deal for this area.
