Least Bittern

On 2 previous Florida trips I had seen Least Bitterns but had not been able to get an image of one. This year I got an image as this elusive member of the heron family camoflaged itself in vegetation at Viera Wetlands. I managed to image with a 500mm lens (handheld) through a "hole" in the vegetation as the bird depended on its suuperb camoflage to stay hidden. OOF vegetation cuts across the bird and other vegetation frames the bird. Not the best of imagesl now I can focus on getting a better image of this diminutive heron. Enjoy.

At Viera one doesn't venture off dry land into vegetation in the water; something about a plentiful supply of gators!! I was standing about twelve feet outside the vegetation imaging a bird that was about four feet inside the vegetation. That gave me a focusing distance of about sixteen feet, just within minimum focusing distance.
