LED Flash

Any chance of a company getting to the point where creating an LED flash would be feasible?

Just wondering since I think if it could be done, it might solve a lot of these over-heating issues I read about with the SB-900 and other flashes.

LED panels don't have enough light by far, for situations where flash is needed.

For example these two-pound $1500 behemots have 50W of power. Power doesn't illuminate images, energy does. Energy is power multiplied by time. If you shoot at 1/250 sec shutter time, these panels yield 0.2 Ws of energy (watt-second). [ 50W x 1/250 s = 0.2 Ws ]


A single Nikon SB-800 delivers maybe 60 to 80 Ws of energy, so to match one speedlight you'll need 300 Arri panels weighing a total of 600 pounds and costing $450,000.

The humble xenon-bulb in a tiny speedlight delivers a tremendous amount of light energy.
