Lens Help

Discussion in 'Lens Lust' started by GMoore, May 4, 2007.

  1. Perhaps this subject has been discussed previously, if so please point me in that direction. I have the opportunity to purchase a used 80-200 2.8 AF-D (2 ring). I'm torn between this lens and the 55-200 VR. I will be using it mostly for birds and outdoor sports. Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Thanks.

The 55-200 is a consumer grade lens, which means it isn't the best in terms of optical quality. While the 80-200 AFD is much better optically, it lacks AFS and VR, two features that would likely be useful, especially the AFS with the D100.

I don't know about focus speed of the 55-200, but my 80-200 focus speed seems as fast as the 70-300AF-S VR on a D70s.
  5. Thanks for all the input. No doubt the lens has seen some use but I know the owner well (my next door neighbor). He's a professional photographer and looks after his equipment.

If I had that choice, I would grab the 80-200 in less of a eyeblink. I think that it is lens you can keep for years. But the larger aperture makes the 80-200 useful.

Thou 55-200 has VR. I think its more useful with larger aperture and better optical design.

I havnt tried either. But my impression is that 80-200 is far superior. If you dont count a slighty faster AF and VR. I would go for quality over features in all my lens buys as I think they pay off that you dont upgrade them with new so often.

I built this impression off reviews and forum talk. Thou it would be great idea to test them before buy. Even a 80-200 can be bad if the previous owner hasnt been nice to it.
