In my never ending quest to spend way more money than I should, I've been contemplating some changes.

I only occasionally use focal lengths beyond 300mm - mostly for a yearly birding trip where I'll use a 300mm PF on the D500 - so we are talking a ffeqv of 450mm. I have, very rarely, used a 1.4TC with it but as I mostly hand-hold, I'm just no longer steady enough (even with VR) to get reliably sharp images.

So I'm contemplating the new 70-200S along with the new 2xTC on my Z7. I figure that would put me up on the the same focal length range with the added advantage of being able to better frame with the zoom. In DX mode, I'd be in the same range as the 300-1.4tc combination.

So I figure I lose a stop on the native 300 but gain some resolution and focal length flexibility. The open question is whether the 70-200S - 2xTC combination is close enough in IQ to the native 300 . . .

If you look on FM there's a thread for the 70-200S. Look for a post by LanceB (who on occasion posts here on the cafe'). He just took delivery of the lens plus both tc's. He posted several images of birds taken with different combinations of lens and both tc's on the Z7. May be helpful for you. I'll warn you, they look awesome so have your plastic ready. :)
