I don't want to lug all my lens's to a Zoo shoot,I want to do quality pics, show ing Hairs on the animals, and I have lens that can do that, would the 70-200 be ok or 300, 500?
what is your favorite lens for the Zoo? I've never done one before.

the perfect zoo lens is the old 80-400 and you can get one for < 900 used
I used one for 6 yrs

here's one of my favs (and I sold it, google 'randy rimland the laughing lion' to see all the countries that used it)

I take my 70-200 with me and it does just fine for most things. But then again, we're very close to our animals at our zoo so your results may vary.

For the ultimate quality, take the new 80-400.

Apart from the variable aperture, it's like having a bag full of primes with you. The image quality is first class.

I took my 55-300 out. The range in zoom was great. Some animals were a bit farther than the rest so having the wide range was helpful.

thanks guys, well I'll give her a try with the 70-200, and my Nikon TC-20E II.
looking forward to it.

have you got the 1.7xTC?

ive never seen a decent shot taken with the 2xTC on any lens.

its acceptable in an energency on the super telephotos for subjects not too far away but thats about it unless image quality isnt a primary concern.

For me it depends on how I feel that day and which zoo I am going to. I take either the Sigma 150 macro OR the 70-200VRII OR 300 f4. I also bring along a 1.4TC.

yep 1.4, 1.7, 2.0 so far on my test shots Sigma 500mm with 2.0 TC I can read the writing on a 5 gal paint bucket across 5 lane road, shooting through my living room window.............. we see!!

I would seriously be interested in seeing a 1000mm shot from the lens but something with a lot of contrast and details like a bird

I also wasn't crazy about the 2x but it was good on the 300vr in a very controlled situation (fx,ff,alot of support, fast SS)

I took my D3s and 300 2.8 for my first zoo outing with my new lens. I want to get back there again, but too tied up with work and my sons hockey. LOL

Here it is Randy, I was mistaken, My Nikon 2xtc won't fit on the Sig 500, the one that I tried was Kenko 2xtc, so that is what I used today, tell me what you think, I have very mixed emotion from results, crop 12.5% left Flickr tabs for EXIF
