I have a Nikon D80 & need a lens for low light situations. My daughter is in a
dance recital and the only place in the concert hall that has light is the stage.
Need advice on a lense that is reasonable.

    Thanks for the reply's, I have a 50mm/ 1.8 and I don't think I will be able to
get to close to the stage. Last year I was 50 yds. from the stage and I don't
think I will be able to get a good shot of my daughter from there.

In that case, you have an excuse to get a 200/2 .

In that case, try the AF 85/1.8, with 70% more reach than your 50/1.8 it should be long enough. This lens is good, and relatively affordable compared to other long, fast glass.

I would think about trying to find a good used 180 2.8 AF-D that you could use.

I use to use mine all the time at wide open f2.8 with my D70 and it worked very well for indoor dance recitals.

Remember to spot meter on the face with bright stage lights in A mode or use a medium toned costume, keep the ISO set at 1600 and good luck!

If you were in town I would be glad to lend you my copy, but this day and age I am afraid to ship any lens anymore. Might be someone from the cafe in the Huntsville area who might have one of these lenses around and let you borrow it if you were willing to drive up there.

    Just a thought.

    One other thought,

    Try a rental!

I would think about the 70-200VR, would make for a good handheld combo froma good distance away and it works pretty good at f2.8!

Not a bad rental price, and they are a good company to work with too.

  9. I wish I can give the same excuse to get the 200 F2

But the 70-200 VR is also a nice option with less the price of the 200. But you can't go wrong with any of these
