Lenses for London trip

Hi,

I was wondering if the following lenses with a D700 would be enough for a 3 week trip to London, England.

Nikkor 24-120mm F4
Nikkor 50mm F1.8D
Nikkor 35mm F2D

Would I need anything more telephoto than 120mm?

I also have a 18-200mm DX & Tokina 11-16mm lens that I use with my D200, but I'm not sure if the Tokina would work on the D700.

Thanks

first of Tokina would work on D700 but around 14-16 range - would not recommend it

To answer your first question i would say just take 24-120 and be it. You could take 35 if you want to do some night shoots wide open but its your call. Personally I would just take zoom.

We took our family to London and Paris last summer. I took the D700 and a couple lenses, but ended up using the 16-35/4 and leaving the rest in the hotel.

I have since sold that lens and replaced it with the 24-120/4. If I were to go back, I would take the D700, 24-120/4, SB-400 and leave the rest of the lenses at home. The 24-120/4 is a great travel lens.

1+

Summer time f4 more than adequate, 24mm to 120mm very good on D700 (FX) in urban environment.

Enjoy the London trip.

Is the 24 wide enough on FX for interiors? I'm planning on getting that myself, but for a trip to Spain later this year was also going to rent a 16-35 for cathedral, palace, etc. interiors.

well it would depend on your preference - 24 is wide but if you have no space its still limiting. I would go somewhere indoors and try it out yourself -heck try bathroom. if 24 is working well for you and you can get angles you want - sold. if not you may want to look into something else.

I was in your place some time ago just picked up Tokina 17/3.5 - love it and its light and well made. for time when you dont want to travel heavy yet have ability of wide this works for me

If I need to limit myself to one lens during travel it would be the 24-120. I use the 24-120mm range much more than the 16-35mm range during travel. Most of my shots are taken at 35mm, so the 24-120 allows range on both ends where the 16-35 topped out at 35mm.

A 90 degree FOV is about as wide as I like, and if the need arises I can add the 21/2.8 to the travel kit.

Thanks for all the tips. I think I'll just take the 24-120mm F/4 and the 35mm F2 for shooting at night and indoors. I didn't plan on taking a flash because when I was in Italy a while back, none of the places that I visited would allow flash to be used. I'm hoping the D700's high ISO capabilities will be enough to handle no flash.

I only used the SB-400 (small flash) for outdoor fill-flash when the sun was behind the subjects. It really made the faces pop rather than being shaded. The SB-400 is very small and helps conserve the camera battery. I got the idea from Randy who used it on an Italy trip with the 16-35/4. He had a couple threads with example shots.

Rather precisely to the point.....

I used my London trip in 12/2010 to justify my 24-120f4 purchase.

It was a marvelous choice given the range and relatively fast aperture and marvelous sharpness.

It's now my not-to-be-without lens.

Sure I had my 14-24 and a couple fast primes.
The 24-120 is the one to have.

If I had to add one and only one to the 24-120 it would be my darling 16mm!!
So many London opportunities for the 16!!!

BTW....we got "stuck" in London in December for 5 extra days by the snow and Heathrow shutdown,
Stuck in a marvelous flat in Chelsea London!!!
Life is good!

I went to the UK in July last year and, other than a trip to Slimbridge's bird sanctuary near Gloucester where I used my 70-200 f2.8 + 2x TCIII, only really used my 16-35 f4 VR and 24-70 f2.8. I would suggest that the 24-120 would be an ideal lens for your trip if you also take your D200 and the Tokina 11-16 as this will cover your indoor requirements for that extra wide angle appeal and you won't need to change lenses. However, your low light high ISO won't be so good on the D200.

I'm an American expat living here in the UK and work in London from time to time. Here is my list I recommend.

- 24-120 F4 for sure
- F1.4-2.0 of some sort
- UW if you have one for any UW shots inside or out.

I have to ask, London for 3 weeks or the UK for 3 weeks?

I agree with everyone else comments, take the 24-120 and a fast prime and enjoy your time in my city
I've taken to just carrying my D700 and 35 these days through London

London for 3 weeks, but I plan on going to Stonehenge too. My itinerary is still being planned.
