and delivering low contrast seem to limit the dynamic range of cameras. Some studies indicate that resulting dynamic range is less then 1:1000 with regular AF-S zooms. Top zooms and primes deliver about 1:2500.

The most interesting zone in MTF to predict this probably is "local contrast" zone - 3-7 lpm. This also might be the explanation why some wide-angle zooms and lenses are criticized, while others, like Zeiss Y/C 21mm, even being not optimized for digital, are superb.
