Let's see some more photos from the little D3100. Seriously considering buying one within the next few months, especially now that there's going to be a hopefully not too expensive 50/1.8G coming to park on it.

Too many D7000 threads around here, and soon 5100. Need to see some more pics from the D3100.

GO!

Here's a recent one with the D3100 & 35 1.8:

I find the default settings are very neutral out the box. Needs a little tweaking. Honestly though, I mainly use my D3100 for it's video feature. It's the cheapest motion jpeg camera that does 1080P.

Here's a couple that I've taken.

Taken with a Quantary 70-300 f/4-5.6D at 300mm, 1/400th, f/7.1, at ISO 400

Very nice also Gary! Especially love the train shot. Very nicely composed there. Were you manually focusing that Quantaray (Tamron?) 70-300mm lens or is that one of the ones that autofocuses?

So this is your wife's P&S, right?

She's almost 8 months! Yeah, this is basically our family P&S camera. I would of got a GF2 or NEX-5, but neither do 1080P in motion jpeg. I hate dealing with AVCHD files. And honestly the 1080P video on the D3100 is sharper and cleaner than the D300S. My only gripe is that the D3100 doesn't seem as precise with focusing compared to the D3000. You really need to make sure you've locked focus before firing the shutter.

Running the D3100 through an HDMI connector, the HD video is clean!

Lovely! Nice shot of the cruiser. My favorite is the last one though. 70-200VR on a tiny little body, heh heh. Great shot!

heh, don't get me started on AVCHD files. :Teeth: For video I picked up a Panasonic TM-700 camcorder which does spectacular 1080/60p video, except that nothing really supports that. I've been downconverting to 720/60p but keeping the source files hoping that one day everything will support that format better.

So how are the controls on the 3100? I don't think anything has really changed since the D40, right?

Controls are actually pretty intuitive, but menu-wise it still uses the D3000 and older menu layout which kinda sucks. It's like a GUI interface from the D200. You'd think they'd bring it more inline with the other bodies. Come to think about I think this body uses a very strong AA filter. I shoot jpeg with it and had to crank it up higher than my other camera bodies. The D3000 I owned prior to it was sharper out-of-box. I was tempted to get the D7000, but I prefer the D300 for work and the D3100 for home/wife.

Video-wise though it's great. I got mine used just a little more than $400 and for that price there is no other 1080P motion jpeg camera, either P&S and interchangeable lens bodies. Contrary to what is said, MF lenses aren't that bad with the D3100 either. While it won't meter it will indicate focus which helps. Plus if you know your lighting, it's no problem using MF. For video, the tracking AF is okay, but you get aperture control in A mode which is the best part. Better than Canon I believe which is totally automatic.
