Lightroom 2.0 has been officially released!

So what's new?

The short list:

  • Everything that was already in the beta
  • Camera support - official Olympus e420, e520, unofficial Canon 1000d, Nikon D700
  • Official release of ACR 4.5
  • Volume Browser in the Folders panel
  • Easier way to change the folder hierarchy
  • Many of the date/time bugs have been fixed
  • Much improved local adjustment brush tools
  • New Gradient local adjustments tool
  • and much much more
The full loooooooong list is up: http://photoshopservices.wordpress.com/2008/07/29/adobe-lightroom-2-released/

It'll upgrade 1.x and 2.0 beta catalogs. Usual common sense backups apply.

Costs - new $299, upgrade $99

But this is the big one....

The DNG Profile Editor has been released as a public beta. It allows the building of complex custom profiles for use with any raw files (not just DNG). No more complaints about ACR/Lightroom's colour - it can be whatever YOU want it to be.

And what's more, new camera profiles have also been released which replicate the manufacturer's own appearance. No more 'why does Lightroom mess up my photos' - the profiles are an excellent match.

Hi Guy,

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on how this now compares with Aperture for your D700 shots....

Hi Jez - I've been using the Beta in preference to Aperture for a few months now. It's faster and I prefer the output (although I preferred Aperture for 5D shots). The addition of the new camera profiles is a huge step as they match the Nikon profiles in NX. At a stroke it's removed the slight magenta tones you would see with ACR4.4 in some light for skin tones.

If the LR 2 profiles exactly match the ones coming from NEFs than I'm jumping on it ! I've been using LR from the first Beta version and it always bugged me that I couldn't replicate the settings I had on my D50 and this could be th big break !!!

It's a shame they didn't react to Apple cutting the price of Aperture....

I'm going to try to create one that replicates S5 Pro OOC JPEGs too, although it doesn't look easy...

I never managed to get LR to look like an S5 Pro JPEG.

I am not sure that you can just make one camera look like another though.... I spent a weekend profiling my S5 Pro, and while, say I could get the greens right, the blues were wrong, or the reds etc. And off course colours change depending on the OOC DR setting.

I will upgrade but I refuse the pay double the US price, as its just shameful.

Code works just fine, but damn they still charge tax unless you call your order in, crooks!
