LR3 slow with External HD

Decided to move my LR cat and images onto a EHD (WD 640GB) with Firewire 800 connection.

Whenever i do an adjustment especially with the adjustment brush it is as if the image freezes for a split second and then the adjustment takes place. When my LR cat and images were on the internal drive this did not happen.

Even checked by putting a small cat. back on the internal drive and experienced no delays at all with any adjustments made.

My iMac is the i7 2.8GHz with 8GB RAM.

Is this normal, anything i can do to speed it up?

Cheers

Hey Mark I'm very new to LR, so haven't done very extensive editing with it yet. I have a similar set up, I have my images on an EHD FW 800, iMac i7 2.93 GHz with 4GB RAM. I don't think I'm having a delay like you're describing. Not really sure what's going on there.

800 FW is faster than 400. USB2 is slower yet. My guess is your externals are either FW 400 or usb and that is causing the slowdown.

I have a minimum of 3 usb drives running at all times and I have not noticed such a glitch when working in LR3 at any time.......even tho your connection is FW what is the rotation speed of the drives...could it be caused by the buffer of your drives......I am just curious as all my drives are connected thru an older 9 port hub and I am doing all my work on a Dell Studio laptop........
