Making eggs - Sandhill Cranes mating...

It is another beautiful day on the west coast of Canada.

I went down to the Reifel Bird Sanctuary, spring is definitely in the air.

I happened upon a pair of Sandhills making eggs, or at least doing the happy dance.

This is the same pair that had a successful breeding season last year. The young fellow from last year was a few hundred yards away as the parents had chased him off as they are trying to get him to move out of the basement... He was calling for them for hours and they just ignored him....

A few hours later they let him rejoin them when they were feeding out on the marsh.

Thanks Louis, I was standing there with two other photogs watching the cranes from a distance and all of a sudden the male jumped up on the female. We were like wow, and started shooting.

Thanks Karen, Yes they are a lot more gentle than the GBHs. It was quite exciting to see and rather special as they tend to go out into the marshes to get it on rather than in the middle of the path...

The colt from last year is all grown up but he still wants to be with his parents. He cried out for hours and his parents ignored him...
