Male Rufous and Ruby-throated Hummingbirds for comparison

  1. The Ruby-throated Hummingbird is the most common species in the south east. Occasionally a Rufous will be spotted.

    Mature Male Rufous. Note that the gorget will range in color from red-orange to coppery to golden. Look for the copper colors on the body and the tail.

    Look closely at the gorget because it looks different depending on how the light is reflected from it as shown in these photos of a mature male Ruby-throated.
