Matrox and dual external monitors

Hello all,

I've been looking around and I'd like to find a way of attaching two external monitors to my Macbook Pro 17" laptop. I have found the company Matrox which looks interesting, but I don't know so much about graphic cards, external monitors, etc. I have an old CRT which I'd like to preserve (before updating that too in the future), which connects with VGA to a VGA to MiniDVI into the Macbook at the moment. I'd like to find a "good" new external monitor (somewhere in the lines of 27-30") to use as third screen, mainly for photo editing usage. That would be my primary monitor when working on the desk, with the macbook as second monitor and the old VGA as "little" extra.

What do you guys suggest?
1. As way of connecting all that to the macbook? This should have no lag at all (if possible?), as primary work will be done on the (yet to be bought) new external monitor, together with external wecom tablet, etc.
2. As external monitor satisfying these conditions?

I do no gaming at all. (I add this, as I've read that this could be an issue in some cases).

Thank you all for your suggestions!
Take care,
Gabriel

As you have not had any replies yet from Mac users I will throw in a few thoughts - but please bear in mind I am not a Mac user neither have I tried to attach more than one monitor to a laptop!

First I am guessing that you are not really referring to a graphics card when you mention Matrox but there range of multi monitor adapters Here?

These of course use the existing GPU in your laptop to split the display over 2 or more monitors

Someones blog connecting 4 http://daggle.com/macbook-pro-multimonitor-4-monitors-at-once-1577

As to an external monitor if you are critical about photo editing you cannot go wrong with either the NEC spectraview (and profiling package) or similar but more expensive Eizo

Thank you, Tony, for this good information. I'll take a look at the NEC link you added.

All the best,
Gabriel
