Sends a shiver .... now I live in SoCal I dont like to remember that damp cold that comes shortly after the misty season. But lovely pics, haven't seen a coal mine in years. Out here we have oil pumps that look like those birds on the edge of a glass continually pecking at the water.
Thanks Patrick. The British mining industry is now more or less dead. This mine closed in the late sixties and is kept alive as a museum by a small number of former mineworkers. It's within walking distance of my house, and I find myself quite obsessed by the old structures from time to time. It's compelling, but also very difficult to photograph, as the shape of the winding gear is extremely hard to accommodate.
