Thank you everyone that has looked at these photographs, and more so to those that have posted their comments. There is a very interesting discussion over at NikonGear in their PJ section where these same 4 images are posted. You might learn something about the philosophy of photography.

Oh boy, Ron walks into a room and all hell breaks out. :m11:

Interesting discussion though, it's good to be able to read what differing views that people can get from the same photo.

Thanks for the link Ron, and the photo's.

JMHO...These images are not representative of good street photography. LOL

I think your opinion is a bit of a cop out. Taken on its face you are applying a very narrow definition of street photography. If nobody broke the rules, nothing would ever change. Not taken on its face, there is a strong possibility that most of my detractors are having a negative emotional reaction to something that challenges their values, but are trying hide their true feelings.

Considering that on the internet I can't look you in the eye, I will never know what the truth is. Your denial of the later possibility is meaningless for the same reason.

Some opined that all of these women were average looking. Its all to easy to say something that subjective when not confronted by an immediate reaction. Try walking up to a woman as good looking as any of these four and saying that she is average looking. You would not like the experience.

These images get thousands of views on flickr. Flickr is different from this forum, its closer to the real world rather than being composed of a self selected bunch of self appointed photo critics.

Frankly, if this was bad photography, nobody would even bother to say anything about it.

+1...these are "snapshots"

The thread makes me think about how much a subject is capable of "carrying" a photo.

I guess it is possible to point a camera towards an interesting subject, push the button and create an image that people wish to view. For example, a friend of mine held his camera over his head and grabbed a snapshot of his favorite baseball team running on the field after a World Series victory.

I don't think looking at the number of viewers is an accurate indication of the quality of a photograph either. Naturally, my most viewed photographs are of large events with a great deal of interest surrounding them (e.g., Rose Bowl, Chicago Bears game, etc.). I have photos from lesser events (e.g., Little League baseball) that are far superior to the ones from the big events in my opinion (in part simply due to access), yet they receive far fewer views.

Some opined that all of these women were average looking.
I disagree with that assessment. Your subjects are interesting...it is just that I would prefer that the photos do them justice.

Frankly, if this was bad photography, nobody would even bother to say anything about it.
So, people don't make comments about bad things? I think another Philosophy 101 course with an emphasis on Logic ("if this, then that") might be in order.

gnagel, calling anyone's photography a snapshot is a cop out. Same comments to you. Is your dislike based on a true analysis of photography or a cultural/emotional difficulty with subject matter that is too sexual for you? Did you read the thread over at Nikongear? Its so easy to say these lousy things when you don't have to look me in the eye.

As for anything 101, you are the one in need of an education. Really, nobody bothers if the stuff is crap. Do you remember Robert Maplethorpe? People said his work was pornographic. Sally Mann was accused of child porn. There are so many examples that the biggest mistake you can make is to go in the direction that you are going in.

By the way, I really don't like playing pay back games.

I did read the thread at Nikongear. As I said, the whole discussion makes me think about how much a subject is capable of carrying a photograph.

I really don't think your photos are too sexual. Not at all. My opinion is that they simply don't hold enough interest for the viewer (me). The subject might be a beautiful woman (a good starting point), but I think more can be done with the photo than grabbing a snapshot from the side with other people connected to them in the background. With better vantage points and/or expressions (or activities of interest), these could be very nice photographs.

I have no idea what you are referring to regarding "pay back games"? In any event, I have no interest in playing games. I won't be posting within this thread any further.

Thanks!

I like 'em! They make a strong statement about place and people. The show people contained in their own little world. Sure they are not an Adams or other "masterpiece" but they are refreshingly new!

Your absence will be appreciated. However, considering some of your remarks in a previous thread, I find your comments to be disingenuous. Again, denials mean absolutely nothing to me due to the inherent lack of veracity in internet forums. The only objective measurement is the number of views, and for that matter, the amount of fuss the whole thing creates.

No idea what the drama is about but Ron I like the photos. The first one especially is great. I liked some previous photos I saw from you also - from an art gallery with the Sigma 30/1.4?
