As my last post (including Hoopoe shot) aroused some interest in this rare European bird, I found some more shots of this specie in my archives, including a distant IF shot, not very good, but still my ONLY in-flight shot of a Hoopoe... Hope you like them.

    Hi Igor

Nice pictures. The Hoopoes are fascinating birds.
How do you find the TC1.7 with the 300mm 2.8VR? I have the same set up, but still can't make my mind up if I like the TC1.7 or not.
I believe that you have to be very steady if shooting at 510mm to get a sharp shot. My technique is probably to blame for my, shall we say, not very good shots.:)

I swear by the TC1.4 with this lens as it works like a dream though.
Be interested to hear how you rate the 1.7 combination as compared to the 1.4.

  11. Beautiful captures Igor!

This bird is right at the top of my 'to-capture' list. I saw it several times but never had a good chance to photo it.

  12. Excellent photo's!

Thanks Phil, your right, Hoopoes are very shy, the handful of shots I have was taken rather by chance than by chasing/stalking. Good luck! :)

Hi Dave, my experience isn't 100% positive either. I'd blame the 300/2.8 VR rather than TC17E. At 510mm VR is so weak you get a lot of blurred frames even at 1/500.
    I also shoot Canon 400/4 with a TC14. Canon's IS is MUCH steadier, down to 1/125 at 560mm !
The only remedy for handheld shooting is taking BURSTs. I almost always get 1-2 sharp shots in 8-10 frame burst.

Have a look at my thread , posted some shots taken with D200 and 300/2.8 vr+ TC17E:

Thanks for your comment, and good luck!
