    Dear Nikon Cafe members,

Yesterday I purchased a RRS BH-55 ballhead and I am afraid that I made a mistake.

The diameter of the RRS BH-55 base is 2.9" and the diameter of the upper disc plate (on top of the rapid rise column) is 2.4". Unfortunately, I did not realize this until placing the order and it has already shipped.

    My question:
Can a smaller diameter upper disc plate securely hold a larger diameter ballhead?

I'm not worried about how it looks. If this is a problem these are my ideas for a possible solution:

    1) Return BH-55 for BH-40
    2) See if upper disc plates on 3-series tripods are larger in diameter. If so, see if I can retrofit a 3-series upper disc plate on a 2-series tripod.
    3) purchase a Gitzo 3-series tripod However, this is very expensive.

Please advise and thank you very much for your feedback,

    John

  2. Your setup, although it may look a bit awkward, will still work.

While your setup will work fine, there is an option 4) I'll trade you my Markins M20 for your BH-55. It would work perfect on my 1325!!

Honestly... I don't know what I want right now!!

I'm trying to do too many things at once..

Ball head change, Gimbal mount, leveling base... it's all support related, but fortunately (or not) separate decisions.
