Hello Nikon Cafe,

I'm in the process of researching the move from Canon to Nikon. I'm looking to find Nikon equipment that is comparative to the Canon bodies and lenses that I was using. Currently i'm using:

7D Gripped
40D Gripped
Tokina 12-24mm f/4
Canon 100-400 f/3.5-5.6
Two Canon kit lenses 18-55 and 55-250

Can you guys give me some insight onto which equipment which would be similar to this?

Thanks!

There's a fellow caf'e member that just sold all of his very high end nikon gear and is now using very high end canon gear. In all honesty, his nikon shots looked much better, (sharpness color rendition etc). But that's just me and my eyes. although sharpness really isn't all that subjective. anyway, both platforms are proven and we're splitting hairs as to which is better. to be honest, an idea of what you shoot would give a better idea of what to recomend in terms of nikon/nikkor equipment. imho, you're in for a pleasant surprise.

edit: i guess apexmotorsportsphoto sorta tips me off. then i guess it's fast frame rate and full frame vs cropped. also $$$?

It'll be a slow transition. I'm not gonna jump right into it. I might end up shooting both for a year until I can save the money to sell off all of my Canon gear and shoot strictly with Nikon. I made the mistake of not listening to a friend of mine who shoots Nikon and referred me to this forum. I do both photos and video but as for now the photo aspect is more important for me

I actually talk to two photographers who made the switch to Nikon from Canon and couldn't be happier. I guess it's also just a little overwhelming since I don't know much about the brand

What I would consider Nikons equivelent to your Canons...
7D = D300/D300s
40D = D90
Tokina 12-24F4 (they make a nikon mount of teh same lens. I have one its nice).
Canon 100-400 I woul say the Nikon 80-400.
Kit lenses Canon 18-55 & 55-250 = Nikon 18-55 & 70-300.

7D Gripped - Nikon D7100 w/ grip
40D Gripped - Nikon D3000/3100/3200/5000/5100/5200 w/ grip (Nikon does not manufacture grips for these cameras, so you'll need to look at Meike, Zeikos, etc.)
Tokina 12-24mm f/4 Nikon 12-24 DX
Canon 100-400 f/3.5-5.6 - Nikon 80-400 older AF version or newer style AF-S version
Two Canon kit lenses 18-55 and 55-250 - Nikon 18-55 and 55-200 or 70-300

That's what I would consider comparable to what you currently have.

This is pretty much the most reasonable comparison, but I would disagree with the choices for the 40D. When I bought my 40D back in the day the comparable Nikon model sold at the time was the D300. That would be the best match, or if buying new then the D300s. Personally, I would buy two D7100's at this point if I was in your shoes, however.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. It's definitely going to be a slower transition. I don't have the money to buy everything at once but I will slowly purchase and sell as I have the need and means to

You will really not make people believe, that either the D300 or D300s is at least comparable with the 7D, will you?
I suppose, that you never used not compared them side by side.
The 18-55/55-200 from Canon and Nikon are comparable - both in quality and the stamp "don't buy it".

Uh I have a D300 and have used 7d's also. Yeah I say they are close.

Get a D7100, not a D300. I have and love both, but if you want the benefits of the current generation of sensors, D7100 is the choice. Yeah it's a bit smaller and not a "pro" body but this is made up for in other areas, ie dynamic range and stunning sharpness. The 300/4 + 1.4x or new 80-400mm would be perfect (and dare I say better) replacements for your 100-400.
