These guys are hard to get shots of, at least for me:wink:
I have got to buy me a D300 for these little birds, I hate having to crop them so heavily:frown:

Nice serie !

I confirm what you said about getting a DX body: I also shoot a D700 + 300 f/4 (+1.4 converter sometimes), but for bird as small as these, we definitely need more reach.... so if a 500 f/4 is out of our financial reach, a DX body should help quite a bit ! (still, even with a DX body, a 500 f/4 is a dream....:Curved: )

I would love a 500 f/4, but it is definitely out of reach financially.
I have been thinking about that D7000, the higher megapixel/crop body would help. Right now I just need to find some bigger birds to shoot:biggrin:

I can give you some addresses where there are great big OSTRICHES !!! ...then,you might only need a 50mm lens !

No joke, I went recently to an "open zoo" in France, where they have thousends of birds of all sizes, most of them FREE, but used (+/-) to humans, so it's a pleasure to shoot them ! Have a look at two of my older threads at https://www.nikoncafe.com/vforums/showthread.php?t=300513 and https://www.nikoncafe.com/vforums/showthread.php?t=300514 !

LOL, I think an Ostrich would fit the bill nicely! Your "Birds at the zoo" shots are very good! I have been wanting to go to the Atlanta Zoo it's just I hate going to Atlanta!

These are all very nice Mike. But a DX would definately help for small birds. If you look at Jason's work with his 600, everything is shot with a D300s. In fact I don't know if he even owns an FX body. If you're talking short term, I'd buy a used D300 and wait for the new D400 to show up.

Yea, I miss my old D300 when it came to these type of shots! I sold it to fund the D700 as I enjoy shooting portraits the best. I have been wanting to get another for a while but the prices haven't come down as I had hoped, even used bodies.
I wish I could duplicate Jason's shots, he makes spectacular bird photos and that 600VR helps a little!!
