My birthplace and American history

Discussion in 'Landscapes, Architecture, and Cityscapes' started by Frits, Jul 8, 2008.

  1. I was born and raised in Holland in a city called Leiden (near The Hague).
Leiden is a beautiful, very old fortress town with a very rich history. It was also the birthplace of Rembrandt, the famous painter.

Its connection with American history is of some significance:
Next year it will be 400 years ago that the Pilgrims arrived in Leiden from an oppressed existence in England. They stayed in Leiden for more than 10 years to prepare for their voyage to the New World. They briefly returned to England in 1620 to board the Mayflower and the rest is history.

Here are a few images from my birthplace (sorry for the blowouts...).

One of the two big churches, which date back to the 13th century or so:

An old square. The building with the stepped front is an old school, which Rembrandt attended in his young years.

The interior of the other old church. This is the church where the Pilgrims had their religious gatherings. Note the gravestones, which make up the floor of the church - a common thing in those years. Their inscriptions are well worn from people walking over them since several centuries now.
