So far my collection includes:

- Nikon 75-150mm 3.5 E
- 85mm f/2 AI-S
- 50mm 1.2 AI-S
- 50mm 1.8 AI-S (Japan all-metal version)
- 45mm 2.8 AI-P
- 20mm 3.5 AI-S

I'm actually quite proud that I've collected these lenses for decent prices after years of searching and careful selection! Though I feel like I need to fill in the gap between the 20mm and 45mm. In the past I've owned the 28-50mm 3.5 AI-S, 24mm 2.8 AI-S and several copies of the 28mm 2.8 AI-S. I'm thinking of taking another stab at the 28mm 2.8 AI-S again to pair with the 45mm 2.8 AI-P. Though I want to keep the lenses as compact as possible. Any suggestions? :D

105mm f/2.5 Ai-S is a natural, classic Nikon.
I actually have the 105mm 2.5 AI-S and I'm planning to sell it to help finance the 45mm 2.8 AI-P. The Nikon 85mm f/2.0 AI-S isn't as sharp, but the size is far more manageable and not as heavy. In fact the 50mm 1.2 AI-S is already pushing it for me in regards to weight, but I keep it around just because of the f/1.2 and it sharpens up nicely at f/2 for day-to-day shooting. I also have the 200mm f/4.0 AI-S (which I'm also planning to sell), but I tend to like the Series E 75-150mm 3.5 a bit more which I feel is quite good for the price.

Jonathan, what you need now is the Noct! (The original 58mm one, not the current new one.). :D
Haha, I can probably buy my current collection of manual Nikon lenses 4-5 times over if I buy a NOCT! :D I actually owned the Voigtlander 58mm 1.4 SL-II (w/58mm filter thread) and that lens is actually quite good. I actually sold the CV 20mm 3.5 (actually better than the Nikon 20mm 3.5) and 58mm 1.4 in order to pursue a pure Nikkor MF kit! Also I prefer the CV 58mm over the newer CV 58mm 1.4 SL-II S with the 52mm filter thread. By forcing the smaller filter size, the new lens is more prone to vignetting just for the sake of the faux old school Nikkor look. :(

I also went through a phase shooting adapted Leica M-mount glass, but those lenses despite their size advantage shoot better on a thinner sensor stack. Also deep down inside I'm a Nikon guy...even if I adapt my MF Nikons on Sony bodies!

The Nikon 45mm 2.8P as an AF lens on a Sony A7III + Techart Pro AF adapter:

I’d say 180/2.8 ED should be on the short list.

the other lenses I would suggest are the 135/3.5 AI and the 200/4 AI. Beef up that longer end!!

I see no 35mm in there. I really liked the nonAI 35 I had.

I was thinking about the 35mm f/2 AI-S, but I tend to have a love/hate relationship with the Nikon 28mm 2.8 AI-S that I keep buying and selling! I have the 200mm f/4.0 AI-S (on my sell list), but honestly the 75-150mm 3.5 E is pretty good for what I need. I previously owned a 28-50mm f/3.5 AI-S which was terrible in the corners, but the center sharpness on that lens is insanely good plus it had a nifty macro feature. Hmm, maybe I'll get that lens again! :D

You've got a great selection. As well as the 24mm f2.8 AIS, 28mm f2.8 AIS and 35mm f2 AIS lenses which you have had or have been thinking about, I would add

16mm f3.5 AI or f2.8 AIS

50mm f2 HC AI'd

55mm f3.5 AI Micro (better than the 2.8 AIS version which is prone to oily blades)

105mm f2.8 AIS Micro

135mm f3.5 AI (or AIS if you can find one)

  • 28mm F2 AIS , is an incredible lens much better than the 28mm F2.8 AIS
  • and the afore mentioned 28mm F2.8 ais (but make sure you get the CRC version focuses to 20 cm, it's also called the food lens)
  • 135mm F2.8 AIS is incredibly sharp
  • Dont try the 58mm F1.2 AIS Noct, then you have to have one!!!
