My first "birding" shots.

I have never really been too interested in birding, but I recently found out there are a few locations within a reasonable driving distance to shoot these majestic raptors.

First trip, I took the D3 / 80-400 combo thinking that would be plenty of reach.

I was happy with those shots, but I wanted more. So, I snuck (not really) my mom's brand new 600mm f4 and headed up again, only to be met with little activity and CRAPPY light (the adults were not even at the nest the first 2 hours we were there).

I did still manage to get a few shots, even in the fleeting light.

(You can see the difference in the hatchlings in just 2 weeks time)

I loved the lighting on this one, even though I had to run the ISO up quite a bit to get it.

And this one is my favorite from the 2nd trip.

The last 3 were taken after sunset, hence the noise from running up the ISO.

We'll probably go back in 2 weeks, as the babies SHOULD be nearing "test flight" age soon.

Not bad for a rookie. lol. Now you're hooked.

Thanks for the kind words.

I'm not 100% HOOKED. If the ONLY birds were Eagles, Hawks, Owls and other big, powerful, majestic birds, then maybe I'd be hooked.

I don't have the patience or the skill to try to shoot smaller, faster, dart-ier birds!

Thanks, Steven and Manny. I REALLY like that last one as well. I had normally had the Shutter a little faster when they're flying, but I had just been shooting them at the nest so 1/320 was working okay, then he suddenly took off and I had no time to adjust, so I just shot and prayed. This is the only one of that series that was even close to useable.
