Taking the family north this year for vacation. We will be spending two days in Mystic Ct before heading up to Bar Harbor for a week. I have done some research on Bar Harbor and there seems to be plenty to do and take pictures of. Does anybody have any info on Mystic (or placed in Bar Harbor not to miss). In Mystic right now we plan on going to the aquarium and possible the steam train/boat trip.

    Thanks for any help
  2. Bar Harbor is fantastic this time of year.

Be sure to go to Jordon Pond for some excellent fresh tea and popovers with homemade jellies and walk downtown Bar Harbor. We went last summer and went out on the Mary Todd Schooner as well as the Whale and Puffin Watch. Also, make sure you stop many times at the Trenton River Bridge Lobster Pound for some of the best Lobster in Maine!

I took about 1,000 images from the trip and am still going through them.

  3. Here are a couple of my favorite shots from Bar Harbor.

There are plenty of places to visit in Mystic. About 20 or so miles west of Mystic is Essex train station where you can take a steam train ride and a boat ride down the scenic Connecticut River. Ten miles or so west of Mystic is the US Coast Guard Academy and across the Thames River is the US Naval Submarine Base where you can tour a retired submarine. Downtown Mystic is a quaint village and you don't want to miss Mystic Seaport Museum. Mystic also has a great aquarium. Its not too far from Newport Rhode Island if you have extra time. Mohegan Sun Casino is on the indian reservation near Mystic.

Bar Harbor is a nice town, similar to Mystic but much larger. The biggest attraction is of course Acadia National Park. The park is open 24 hours a day so that you can take photos with all kinds of light. My wife and I visited there last September and I took a photo of my wife on Cadillac Mountain as she became the first person in the US to see the sunrise that day. Many kinds of boat rides such as whale watching are available and there are lighthouses to be explored. Great restaurants abound.

Each of these places offer fantastic photo opportunities. Happy shooting.
  5. We summer just south of Acadia NP. My only advise would be to get off the beaten trail. You can either hike or rent bikes and ride the extensive carriage paths in the park. Aslo check out either Northeast or Southwest Harbor. Lastly, don't miss the Jordan Pond House (the popovers are to die for!). If you have any specific questions, feel free to PM me. A few misc Downeast Maine Photos here.
