need a bug ID

  1. i found this bush (not sure what it is) and was watching the bee's and this little monster showed up. i have no clue what it is. kind of mean looking. any idea? thanks for looking.

  2. Hi Laurie!

    The bush is a Viburnum and your monster is the larva of a lace wing, a very ferocious but beneficial monster because it feeds on all sorts of plant pests (mealybugs, aphids, etc.).
    Its mandibles ("jaws") are large enough, though, to bite people :smile:.
