Got a rare chance to go out on a photo walk today, and chose to hike a bit over 8 miles of the Neusiok Trail in Croatan National Forest (coastal NC). The 20.4-mile Neusiok Trail is renowned for its numerous boardwalks, but also for insects. No matter how bad anyone claims the insects are, the reality is far worse. Even with large amounts of insect repellent, the bugs are relentless. Today it was "just" mosquitos and spiders, the usual biting flies, ticks, and chiggers were taking a day off, thankfully. The area is always wet, with many swampy areas (hence the boardwalks over the worst parts), essentially the perfect habitat for insects, spiders, venomous snakes, and the occasional alligator. The area is not particularly remote, especially by western US standards, but the Croatan National Forest's 160,000 acres of dense and unforgiving terrain is easy to go missing in. Now, on to the photos!
