Great news! It means that the "old" plastic 50mm f1.8 D will now sell for a bargain price.
Unable to understand why an aspheric element in a 50mm lens though.

hmm, i'll have to consider this one very carefully. the old 50/1.8D glass was stunningly good.

i'm making a concerted move back to primes. if i get a 50mm, i'll be back to my Cadet Gear (24/50/105/200), but with a 200/2 rather than a 200/4 and a 105 macro rather than the 105/2.5 Gauss i used as a cadet (and for many moons afterwards).

Please forgive my ignorance but I havent been keeping up. The old 50mm does not autofocus with my D40 if I remember correctly. Does the new one?

And does the 35mm F1.8 mentioned above?

Both of the lenses mentioned have AF-S, which is the internal silent wave motor. They will focus on the more economical bodies like the D40.

Sweet. I have to replace a lens with my tax returns, maybe I can get one of these primes too.

i wonder if this is the inflated price and perhaps could be cheaper when nikon gets back to normal working order?

I dont often find myself shooting the 50mm range but I'll probably pick one of these up as the price isn't bad and the sample shots look promising.

We've seen this movie before no?

When the 35 1.8G came out at $200, it was very difficult to find and people were buying multiple copies to sell on ebay and Craigslist for $250-$300. Then the initial must have it now crowd moved on and the speculators were desparately trying to sell it for $180. After seeing the reviews and how people who were using it felt about the lens, I was able to get it brand new at Best Buys for $180. Now with what happened in Japan and more speculation, it is back up to about $300 again.

On this 50 1.8G, I wait until the must have it now crowd is done, see how the photos look in real life, then probably be about to pick it up at about the $200 mark.

The question each potential buyer must ask themselves is whether saving $20 on a $220 lens is worth it for them. It took quite a long while for the 35/1.8 to drop from $200 to $180.

While I'm all for saving money, I think some people spend $20 of their time agonizing about it, and they should just go ahead and do it.
