Nothing super duper just a little Nikon 50/1.8. I'm looking forward to the weekend to confirm its as sharp as reported here.
Any suggestions for a subject to test it on?

    Best regards

  2. I usually try to take pictures of signs (usually in front of stores) so I can asses how well the lens reproduces the printing. Also I am a fan of portraits with crystal sharp eyes.

Just some things to think about.

    Andy,

Congratulations on your 50/1.8. Please do not underestimate your lens.
It is definitely a super-duper lens and equal to any made by Nikon at their
repective FLs ( unless you recieved a defective copy ).

The 50/1.8 excels from f4 onwards. it is the equal of all others at its FL
for distant shots esp. landscapes. Of course, it is superb as a portrait lens
    too and low-light.

I might suggest your pet/s, family, street scenes but please no brick
walls. Try different apertures for the same subject. keep the subject
    simple. Focus near/mid/far.

    Good luck.

  6. I have had mine for about a month now, and I am growing to love it. (if I had the $$ I would have a lot of primes!)

The very first pic I took with my 50 1/8 was of a newspaper lying flat on the table. I focused on the middle of a long word, and counted how far back I could still read the letters.
I was at an indoor function last night, and I was about 25 feet from the stage, perfect distance for the 50mm, and the wide apature gave me lots of light to work with.

    Enjoy your new toy.

Try a brick wall from near and far - see the detail of the texture and the lack of distortion

Bought one used recently. build quality surprised me (in a bad way) but I took an hour long walk with the lens and was stunned when I got back the pictures looked so perfect.

  10. "test shot" is the term we generally give to photos which fail to meet our standards of artistic merit, regardless of the subject matter.

Don't take test shots. If you want, do a controlled newspaper test to verify the optical "correctness" of your lens, but otherwise don't think too much about testing. Put your eye on and have a walkabout, collecting images of interesting colors and contrasts that you see. Compose some stuff and bring it back to share. That is how you do justice to a lens, rather than flash-aided snaps of beer cans or cats.
