New Sigma 300 f2.8 HSM + 2x tc ?

Discussion in 'Lens Lust' started by jbear, Apr 27, 2007.

  1. I made a difficult decision and sold my 400 f3.5 AIS to purchase a 300HSM. I will miss that 400, but I am looking forward to having the HSM on this lens. I have seen some outstanding work from this lens, so I am very confident of the IQ. I have a Sigma 1.4 EX already and it is a great tc on the 70-200; I'm expecting it to be even better on this new lens. Does anyone have any experience with the Sigma 2x? I'm wondering if that will be a worthwhile purchase. I used to have one for the 70-200, but I sold it because it wasn't critically sharp to my eye (not bad...just not great...the 1.4 is GREAT). My hope is that with the 300 2.8 being a prime, the 2x will be much better than it was on the zoom. I'm a wildlife/nature photographer shooting with a D200 and many film bodies BTW. Any first hand experience out there? Thanks all!

I owned a 300 2.8 HSM sigma with the sigma 2x, it was my second big lens purchase after the 300 f4 nikon.

My sigma liked the 2x converter very well.

a sample pic here using my D70 I had at the time, all shot at 600mm.

the flight shots were handheld, the pels were with tripod

  3. That is encouraging IQ for a 2x tc! Thanks for the post.

Have you bought it yet? Most people say the 120-300mm f/2.8 zoom has better IQ than the 300mm prime, something worth checking out.
  5. Yes I did check that out. What I got from people that had used both was that in reality (actual pictures...crops and large prints), they are too close to call. Additionally, the prime focuses faster (which you'd expect), and is a little bit better with a 1.4 TC (couldn't find out much about the 2x tc until this post). Since I am replacing a 400, that 1.4 tc will probably be on there a lot. The deal sealer was that I found a great price on the prime. I will form my own opinion once I have it in hand, and I'll be happy to share it here. Thanks for the response.
  6. Though I wouldn't say the Sigma TCs are matched to their lenses, they were designed with 4 lenses in mind: the 300/2.8, 120-300/2.8, 70-200/2.8, and the 100-300/4, so I expect good performance with your 300 and, by all accounts it delivers. It is superb with the 70-200 and 150 macro.

I have tried the 2x with the 120-300 and its IQ is really quite good.

I did notice some CA with the 2x when shooting high contrast back lite objects - maybe 5 or 6 pixels with a D200.

Best part is even with the 2x it is still handheldble - I wish Nikon could make a 600 f5.6!
  8. I had very good success with the Sigma 1.4 tc on the 70-200HSM, 100-300HSM, 180HSM, and even the 50-500. I have always avoided 2x TC's when I could, with the exception of the tc-301+400/3.5AIS combo. That was amazing, and I have heard that the AF 300 2.8's are generally very good-excellent with 2x tc's. Of course until you shoot for yourself you're tied to others' concept of high quality. It is alway nice to hear from people you trust as photographers though :)
