While we were in Yellowstone recently, I had only one photo op related to wildlife... a red dog that was only a few hours old.

What's a "red dog"? It's a baby bison. Bison calves tend to be born from late March through May and are orange-red in color, earning them the nickname "red dogs." After a few months, their hair starts to change to dark brown and their characteristic shoulder hump and horns begin to grow.

Good job making the best of the opportunity, Karen. I love the third one. Barely walking and already looking for something to eat.

You did a wonderful job with your one opportunity!.
Thanks so much, Allan!
Nice sequence Karen. Shows well what a Bisons first moments of life are like.
Hey, Bill! And you taught me the term "red dog"!
Love this post, Karen!!
Thanks, Terri!

Thanks, Dan! Seeing this little guy was a real treat! We went by the herd as we drove to Gibbbon Falls and the female bison were just mulling around. When we returned about 1.5 later, he was there with mom!
Great how these show the interaction between the two.
I was really hoping to get some interaction shots! I Watched them for about 45 minutes.....until hubby was getting way to impatient! LOL!
Learned something new - and loved the photos. Nice job!
That term was new to me, also. Bill (bsinc1962) "educated" me!
Wonderful series!!!
Thanks for commenting, Mitchell!

Wow! You WERE there shortly after birth. I think I would have stood up, too, if a big tongue was in my rear! Butt(Ha), enough about that.

I loved #4.
These are enormous beasts, and are often quite aggressive.
I had never seen the gentle caring side before- makes me think differently about them.
What else can a picture do?

Thanks, Gary. I think of them as fairly gentle beasts.....unless provoked.
That’s one of your best Karen. Great sequence. thanks!
Thanks so much, Rick!
Wow...new life is beautiful. Wonderfully captured!
Appreciate the comment, Bob.
Excellent sequence Karen, scenes not many of us will ever see.
Hey, Louie! Thanks!
The first and last photos are magical for me. Immediately upon seeing the first one, I thought "The first hill."
Great caption, Mike!

Thanks, Aaron! It was a real treat to watch the mom and baby interaction.
