Forum user Dayo requested that I post some pics from these 2 nikkors.
These are non-scientific or professional testing pics and might give some
idea as to the performance of these two excellent nikkors.

The following is the shooting data:
    D70s,iso 200,wb daylight --3 comp,center-weighted,center focus,tripod+ball-head,no exp comp and all mid exp,finger shutter release.

    Apertures used: 2 and 4

Winnie focus around the nose,date-palm in the center on fiber.

No usm, no mods, resized in ps and saved for the web.

The pics can be found here:

To make it more interesting..Can you tie the pics with the correct lens??

  2. Hey Tas.

Thanks for the post. The palm one doesn't quite show the out of focus area so concentrated on Winnie the Pooh but find it tough to decide which is which.

I was thinking there might be a big difference in the bokeh that will give the 1.8 away.

Perhaps those with more discerning eyes will spot the difference a mile off.

  3. O.K. I'll play.

Bound to get it wrong, but what the heck.

    1,4,5 & 7 are the 85mm f1.4
  4. 3 is 85mm f1.4, will check the rest later.
  5. I'm not surprised there isn't a huge difference. Glad I bought the 1.8...
  6. The best ones are the 85/1.4. Duh.

    I'll play....

I believe that 2,3,6,8 are from the 85/1.4
  8. 1,4,5,8 are the 1.4

    Interesting test.
  9. 1 and 4 are the 85/1.4. The outside pictures are too similar for me to tell them apart and are do not represent a case where the 85/1.4 is expected to do better than the 85/1.8, IMHO.
  10. Fahim,

Out of curiosity I looked at the 8 images several times, but found it difficult to make the distinction between the them. #1, 2, 4, 6, 7 may be an f1.4 s, but my eyes <or the computerscreen> are probably deceiving me.

    keep'um coming !!

Thanks all for taking part. It is getting real interesting but let's keep the thread for some more time before I post which lens took what.
I agree that these might not be the best i could do, but I too am learning
    from the experience.

    Best regards

I wish the site that these photos are hosted on would allow you to toggle between the different photos while enlarged. It would make it easier to compare the shots.
  14. OK, here it goes... I would say that 2 and 3 are the 85mm 1.4

    No3 and No4 are at f/2
    No1 and No2 are at f/4
No4 is smoother and sharper than No3, which has too much CA anyway.
    No2 is smoother than No1

(But then, CA can spoil the bokeh and mess everything, eh?)

BTW, Logic says that No2 and No3 is a pair, and No1 and No4 is another pair. Unless you changed lenses more times than you had to, just to complicate things even more...he,he...

The second set is not suitable for testing, in fact the first set is not perfect for testing too, but I really appreciate your effort and the time that you spent.

My thoughts about 1.8 vs 1.4 : Don't bother too much about the differences, I don't think that they're huge anyway. If you have a "feeling" about the 1.4 then buy the 1.4 or else you will always think that your pictures would be better if you had it. If you don't have this "feeling" then save your money and buy the 1.8 that is smaller and lighter too.
Life is simple, let's not make it complicate.

Uh-oh....[IMG] I'm not sure if I'm even allowed to play...

But my guess is the ones that "render" better are the 1.4...whatever that means.

Seriously though tasnim, if you could photograph a person and post 7-10 shots with each lens, it would be a better comparison.

  17. Hey Tas, Are you going to tell us the results?

  18. This is my second choice:biggrin:
  19. #1 and #2 are shot at f2, #3 and #4 are shot at f4.

    I pick #2 and #3 as the 1.4.

I can't really tell any difference in the later 4 shots...sorry.

    Let's Play

Thanks to everyone for being excellent sports. Even though my pics
were not of the quality that most of you post.

Those of you, who got it right...have much better eyesight than I have.

Those who, like me, found it challenging..anyone of these 2 lenses would
    suit us.

Now I might be mistaken!!! So don't take it too seriously.
