So far I like it, only jugded on the few shots I've done so far.

What's your experience with this lens?
Please post your samples as well

It is so small compared to 105/VR

Wow. Looks pretty good to me! I have been thinking about picking up this lens as a short telephoto, plus it is CHEAP used.

Looks very sharp to me.

Funny you should post this now. I just got mine delivered yesterday but haven't had a chance to use it yet. I'm about to go out with it and will post later.

Yes. It's small and cheap. I paid $60 from KEH in BGN condition, but I can't for the life of me find a flaw inside or out. The only reason I can see for the BGN grade is that there is residue from the "passed" inspection sticker that used to be placed on lenses and it came without caps. Otherwise it's flawless. Not even a spec of dust inside.

Quite the comparison. I never knew the AF motors took up that much room!

There are other factors that make the 105 VR larger. They are completely different formulas. The 100 Series E is a very simple design: 4 elements in 4 groups with a 52mm filter thread. The 105 VR has 14 elements in 12 groups, a 62mm fiter thread and focuses 1:1. Those are the factors making it that much larger.

It is a good little lens - I had one for several years. It always lived in the shadow of the 105mm f2.5 which was one of Nikon's most famous lenses, and so perhaps never got the acclaim it deserved. Plus, being given the E label always seems to imply something not quite as good as a Nikkor, although anyone who has actually used E series lenses will know they can be very good.

It's an outstanding little lens. This is the lens, picked up for all of $40, that got me hooked on manual focus lenses. Recent shot with it from my D90 wide open at f/2.8.

It's a great little lens. Morten your lens is an early issue lens, the later versions have a silver metal aperture ring.
This is Spike, 100E series @f4 - D3 camera.

I've just picked one of these up in EX+ condition to use on my D200 (along with a 50/1.8 E series that should arrive in the next couple of days). It might be a couple or three weeks before I get to play with it - but I'm really looking forward to having something to post.

I got mine in the 'film days' for my FM2 kit. It was cheap even then and came with an EM as a rear cap. Nikon used their best glass in the cheapest Series E lenses and it was the choice of fashion photographers in its day. Now it is seeing new life on my Df.
