After having my exchanged copy for a week now and only being able to shoot around the house I can say with out a doubt that I experienced some sample variations. This one is sharp, contrasty and accurate. I'm extremely satisfied with this lens and generally not super picky but I'm glad I didn't settle. I can now see where some are coming from and saying this is one of their sharpest lens in their bags.

Also I have to say that after spending the weekend(wife gave birth to our 2nd  ) in the hospital, VR came in really handy on this lens.

Anyways, here's a quick handheld sample.
This is just in camera settings, re-sized and cropped through ViewNX2.

I have enjoyed the shots you have shared. Nice picture of your son and congratulations on the new addition to your family. My 18-35 is supposed to arrive from B&H tomorrow and plan to give it a real trial on a vacation starting Friday to the Canadian Rockies. I hope mine is as sharp as your new copy.

Thank you!

18-35 of 16-35? Either way you can't go wrong. Look forward to your shots!

This remains one of my favorite lenses on the d700 (the other is the 85 1.4). Both shots are from a recent trip to the Netherlands.
