Showcase Nikon 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX

I am finding this little lens to be a good alternative as a lighter weight carry vs. the 17-55dx f2.8
While it doesn't match the overall IQ of the 17-55 IMHO, I do find it to be a good one lens solution for my style of grab, carry & go shooting.

Here are a couple of samples from yesterdays visit with my grandson Hampton. This big 3 year old is constantly on the move so you have about a micro second to acquire a decent shot.

Kind of nice to have with you when you see something intersting. I enjoy this lens a lot, even though I long for a smaller and lighter camera to carry around with the same quality.

It was with my D300 and minor post processing in Capture NX2.

p.s. It looks like Hampton will be something of a "lady killer" when he grows up, they won't be able to resist that innocent look :smile:

Nothing special, no pp. Just out for a walk testing my new 500mm - had the 16-85 along. It's my favorite 'carry' lens - it and the 70-300VR make for a great two lens kit. I prefer thee two to my wife's 18-200.

I finally made the decision to part with my trustie 18-200mm Nikon. It served me well on my D5000 but was slightly underwhelming with the more needy D7000. I found my 70-300mm Nikon VR very pleasing and thought the 16-85mm would fit in well. I now carry around a small carry bag with both lenses and have most bases covered. If I have a party or something requiring a faster lense I carry the 35mm 1.8 and 50mm 1.5...here are some samples of the new 16-85mm.

Nice shots, I especially like the graffiti. I'm glad you like your new 16-85. It was the first lens I got with my D90 and I still never leave home without it.

Nice! I have to make the change to the 16-85, although the 70-300 is first on my wish list.

Those are very nice shots and they speak highly in favor of the 16-85 lens.
According to Thom Hogan, the 16-85 in his tests was the best of the crop of zooms starting at 18mm.
I have not felt the need for a 16-85 lens since I have been doing very well with the 18-70 although I admit that the VR feature is enticing. Optically I do not find big differences between both lenses and if there are differences, they are slight enough for me not been able to see them. The 18-70 has three LD glass and one aspherical and actually the difference is less than one step forward to simulate 85mm and less than one step backward to simulate 16mm. As I said, for those in need, the VR can make a big difference.

My 16-85 is on my D300s 90% of the time and I love it. Great shots.

One of my buddies recently got that lens, and he's been really happy with it along with the Sigma 30. Were those graffiti shots straight out of camera, or did you add some contrast in post?

That's a nice addition to your kit. We have different lens but similar idea with my 17-55, 85 1.4 and 70-300. Have fun shooting.
