Showcase Nikon 200-500mm f/5.6 E ED AF-S VR

I have been pleased with the 200-500 on my D500 for bif as well. I am still trying to improve my bif skill, but this combo can do its part when I do mine. For example, this shot has a busy background, but the D500 locked on to the pelican and maintained focus on the pelican. And the 200-500 was able to keep up.

I think this is larger than life size. Every detail in the eyes is visible. Also a good demonstration of how flat the DOF is at close range.

Klaus, you shot that at 500mm @1/15s ? WHAT!!! Hard for me to digest. But, I started shooting Plus-X pan and Kodachrome 64. So when I see exif data like that, on a photo like that, it makes my head spin.

The VR on the 200-500 is that good.

Roger, the lens combined with the D3S is heavy and settles well. The VR is the best I've ever used.

I know all about the d3s being heavy. I started with a D1x. I carried 4 batteries with me everywhere I went. Then went through the D2 series (H, X and Xs) and landed with a D3s. That camera does all I need. I got a D7200 for travel, but the D3s is my go to.... I know Will (Trenchmonkey) has made some crazy good images with the 200-500 too.

A cool time to be in this hobby. So much great new tech coming out all the time.

General question for everyone:
Do you use a UV filter on your 200-500? Which one, if I may ask?
The one I have sub-par and I will be searching for a better one.
At B&H, a B+W is $119 and a Nikon brand is $129. I typically use B+W...is the Nikon $10 better?

Nikkor 200-500mm is a quite reasonable choice with teleconverter Nikon TC-14 II attached.

Rank amateur here with the 200-500mm on a D3400, not looking to attempt to be self deprecating I simply understand how much I have to learn when I look at the photos on the Cafe.

I struggle most using this lense on the D3400 with what I would call mirage and graininess I receive when attempting to shoot the photos very quickly, due to my own instability offhand at distance / movements. Most of the photo opportunities I get in the course of my jobs in the wilderness as very quick, and fleeting With no chance to support the camera properly. I’m including bad photos of good subjects to demonstrate what I mean, like the rapidly moving Ermine (weasel).

Aside from the operator’s limitations the lens is very, very impressive to this newby for the price point. My big dilemma once I learn what I’m doing is to spend first on a new body, or lens, classic entry level questions. I’m thinking of putting this 200-500 on a Z series next, as weight and bulk are very hard to deal with in my professions (bush pilot and outfitter).
