Still have not purchased yet, but the Nikon 200-500mm is at the top of my short list.

I've seen some amazing images on this forum from this lens.
... and I've read this lens has very good VR.

In general, at what shutter speed do you turn VR off ?

  2. I don't have that lens, but 1/focal length is a starting point. So 1/200 at 200mm and 1/500 at the long end. Just a rule of thumb. I haven't tested it.

  3. For wildlife, which is the only thing I use it for, I never use VR

Using VR is not necessarily a function of the lens. The Shutter speed being used is more important. Generally. if using a shutter speed of faster than 1/focal length and around 1/500th, VR is not beneficial.

  5. I might turn VR on in low light when there is SOME movement, but it spends most of the time off. This lens is under rated, VR is over rated. Just my opinion. Shot this handheld earlier today in the morning fog, VR off. 1/125, iso 400, f/8, at 500mm.
