The new Nikon AF-S 28/1.4 E ED - what a great lens!

Thanks to the Nikon Servicepoint Munich for delivering my new 28 mm Nikkor just in time for the weekend:).
After spending two days with the new Nikkor, I do not regret selling the AF-S 24/1.4 G and AF-S 35/1.4 G lenses. The focal length of 28 mm fits just right for my personal needs. Having used the Nikon AF 28/1.4 D as well, this new lens is better in image quality in every aspect.

Wide open, the lens produces very nice bokeh. Depending on the situation and background, it might not be as smooth as the 24, but with a little more of what I would call personality. The thing is: The lens is amazingly sharp at f/1.4. For me, this is for the wide angle what the AF-S 105/1.4 E was for the tele lenses.

I really like the bokeh of the lens and do not find it disturbing (this is what I do not like about many other 28 mm lenses on the market).

And yes, at f/8 the new 28 mm is also tack sharp and for sure totally usable as a landscape/cityscape lens (with a reasonable filter diameter of 77 mm).

What else is to be reported at the moment?
  • The build quality of the 28 mm is on par with the AF-S 35/1.4 G, and it handles (roughly 660 g) and almost looks like this lens.
  • The lens is made in Japan and unfortunately expensive. But it has a sturdy lens hood;).
  • The AF is very reliable and fast (D810), much better than the 24/1.4 or 35/1.4.
  • There are not many CAs, shooting against the light does not cause problems.
  • The lens has nice microcontrast which I am used to from the Zeiss ZF and Milvus lenses. It is keeping the highlights very well.

So I am enjoying this lens, and I really hope you are as well:).
How about your impressions and experience with this lens? Just share your thoughts with us!

Kind regards,
Markus

Definitely the goldielocks of the f/1.4 crowd from where I stand. A great professional lens.
