The biggest problem with the 500pf is teleconverters, f8 with the 1.4x is getting slow.

with the 500 f4 fl your at 700 f5.6 with the 1.4x tc and 850 f6.3 with the 1.7x tc making it a really versatile lens that the 500 pf can’t replicate. This gets even more interesting on a D500 or other crop body, you can get insane focal lengths.

i have the 200-500 which I love which gives me pretty much everything the 500pf gives and I’ve added the 500 f4 fl and a 300 pf.

i might pick up a 500pf this year (or better yet if Nikon release a 600pf) for handholding birds in flight but it won’t replace my 500 f4 fl.

Have you considered the Sigma 500mm f4 sport, it's one sharp lens, it's still a pricey lens, but less than the Nikon, it will only cost you one kidney, where the Nikon will take one kidney and lots of blood at the blood bank. I also own the Nikon 200-500mm f5.6 which is a fine lens and very versatile.

1. Hand held with D850.

Nice shots! Especially the bird in flight! I have read about the Sigma 500mm, and I'm sure it's a very good lens. I believe the devil is in the details, and those details probably won't justify the extra money for the Nikon 500mm f/4e. But I really want to stay with Nikon for all my lenses. I'm also using a D500 and a Z7 and I don't want to run into any incompatibility issues when using the FTZ adapter.

But at the end of last year I have bought myself a splendid second hand copy of the Nikkor 500mm f/4e. Changed the lens foot by a Jobu one and purchased myself a Jobu Heavy Duty mkiv gimbal head. I'm really loving the combination, although I think I want a sturdier tripod. I'm using a Gitzo GT3541LS, but I want something heavier for this setup.

I shoot a D5 + 500e on a Wimberly head on that tripod and have for years. I had it's heavier bother and sold it.

congrats on the lens, I think it lost some fame when the little 500pf came out and rightfully so only because at 5.6 the 500e is not 3x better but at f/4 it's 100x better. I hardly use mine much since I got a 500pf

Thank you.
I was also looking at used Nikon 500mm f4 primes myself, but decided on the Sigma 500mm f4 sport do to cost and four year warranty, I could not be happier with this lens.
Congratulations on your new toy, and happy shooting.
By the way, I also noticed most of the people who shoot these lenses use a tripod "which is fine in certain situations, like really early morning light and late evening ", but to get the most out of the lens "shots you would have missed while stationary on a tripod" you need to be able to shoot it hand held, it takes some practice and a little exercise to be able to hold it steady as possible for short bursts of shooting.

This is the tripod and gimbal head that I use when not hand holding, and the sling I use to carry it around.

the 500e comes with a 5yr warranty and resale is significantly better than the 3rd parties
Of course it does Randy, at $10+K. Nikon is a bigger corporation with more head count and larger R&D costs, that's what you are paying for.
Did you see the ludicrous price of the new 120-300mm f2.8 they just introduced.
With the money I saved I bought a pristine 10k shutter count D850.
