a simple, yet unanswered question!

there are 3 raised, equally spaced buttons, just in front of the focus ring.

what are these for? what do they do? does anyone use them?

i hope someone knows

Those are focus lock buttons. Press any one to lock focus.

focus on a subject, lock the focus and then recompose with your main focused subject not at the point of the focusing grid. example is when you have center focus on and you want your main subject in focus and off to the side.
