I bought this lens today, and went straight to a local reserve. One thing I wanted to try was the DX mode on my Z6, and this swan was just far enough away, I thought I’d try. Early days but am loving my Z6 (my first Nikon and first FF camera!)

WOW! Magnificent photos!
The Gear Acquisition Syndrome has struck with full force!:D I have an excellent older 70-300 AF-s VR FX lens that I have had for about 10 years. It tests sharp on my D 7100, works very well, and I love the 450 mm equivalent view.
The weight differential is not much between my lens and the AF P, and I'm wondering if there is a real advantage to buying the newer lens. I've updated my D 7100 firmware so it will be able to use it. A factory tech told me that with the latest software update, the lens will work with my camera, but there are accounts of the lens "timing out" when in the midst of follow focus or panning. What is that all about? Is it necessary to have one of the new high Megapixel Wunderkameras to take full advantage the lens' capabilities? Any advice pro or con will be appreciated! ☺

I did use Topaz DeNoise AI V2.0.0 on the bird shots. I just wanted to see how it would do. The shots were underexposed by 2/3 of a stop and shot at ISO 6400.

This morning I did a direct comparison of three lenses at 200mm: The 70-300 AF-P, a 70-200 f/4 AF-S, and an old 200mm f/4 AIS prime. They were tripod mounted shooting the same target in the same lighting on my Z6.

The modern zoom lenses both bested the old AIS lens, but between the two zooms, I thought the 70-300 was slightly sharper, with more punch in the color and better contrast. I am much impressed with this lens.

I have the old version 1 70-200 f2.8 VR lens that I bought about 15 years ago. I compared the 2 this morning. First I shot at 200 mm with the 70-300 wide open which was f5.3. Then I tried the same shot on the 70-300 but, I had to choose 5.6. 5.3 wasn't available as an option. Both were on the Z6 with FTZ. I'm not too sure if I did it correctly, but I exported these full resolution and tried uploading them that way. I would be interested to hear which one you think has better IQ. Both were shot raw and were imported into Lightroom using the Camera Neutral profile. No editing was done before exporting. I focused on the "a" in Laredo on both shots. Even though the 70-200 was stopped down a bit more, the out of focus areas are smoother. But, alI I think the IQ is quite close. Of course, the 70-200 is much heavier, but can be opened up a lot more. I guess I should have got a shot on the 70-200 at f2.8 for comparison, too.

Quick question. I was culling through some images from a morning walk, and while this one was a reject, I did notice that the background, particularly behind the heron, seems quite "nervous". Has anybody seen OOF backgrounds from this lens render similarly? The image attached is an unedited jpeg pulled form the raw file via Adobe Bridge.

Thanks,

--Ken
