Sure its old, sure its non-AFS, sure its not as light as a 5.6 zoom.....but lets see your work with it.

    I'll start:

    With the Canon 500D:

    Really a great lens IMHO.

  3. Absolutely beautiful Jeff. I don't think I've ever heard a bad word about this lens. Your images continue to prove that it is indeed a great piece of glass.

Here's one I took yesterday at a protest. Frankly I don't see the use for AF-S of VR

It also does the kind of sports I shoot :

Some very pleasing bokeh even at f/5

    Taken with the AF-S

  11. Here's a few from the AFS version...

  12. You guys are on fire with this old chunk of steel and glass  I have a couple of very modest frames to share too....

  13. And SHARP @ 200mm Wide open f/2.8...

This would have to be my favorite lens... 80-200 f/2.8 AF-D (2-ring)...
    Love the Bokeh it produces....
    These 2 shots taken with,

Great shots everyone. I've been contemplating buying this lens for quite a while now but I've heard of softness at the short and long end (ie 80 and 200mm) at F2.8. Any thoughts on this? Shots from soxOZ look pretty sharp to me which might indicate sample variations rather than a lens design issue.

i've never heard of the "softness" on the short side @2.8. fact mine is sharp wide open @200mm. and when it is soft there it's because of my poor hand holding technique ...that sucker is heavy ..lol

    With my 80-200 AF-D

And I agree with nute...my 80-200 is SUPER SHARP wide open at 200mm.

I could post tons of shots I've gotten with this lens...a great lens!

I love this lens and regret even considering selling it. I'm sure I will hang onto mine for a while and perhaps one day upgrade to a newer version:

    Here she is:

Not to bad close up either...I thought I took this with my 85 1.4, until I looked at the exif.

I love how this thing compresses the background:

Not too bad wide open, in close quarters either.

  18. agreed. when i was at the sox game everything was shot at 200mm 2.8 and i was able to keep the ss up high enough to keep them sharp but barely. cold nights with that heavy lens arent easy.

I love mine! This lens is one of the "best bang for the buck" lenses you can buy!
