Nikon changes Capture installation code scheme

Late last night I was almost finished setting up my computer after wiping out the hard drive and re-installing everything from scratch. I downloaded the full version of Nikon Capture 4.2.1 and when I went to register it using the installation code I have since I purchased the product I got a message saying that the program expects numbers in the fields (the old installation code consisted of letters).

It appears that Nikon changed the installation code scheme, fortunately for me I had an old copy of 4.0 saved and all the upgrades leading up to 4.2.1. This meant that I had to spend extra time installing partial upgrades and re-booting the computer.

Now I have to chase after Nikon to get a fresh installation code which may prove hard to do because I have no idea where the original invoice is, I hope they accept my installation code as proof.

If you are using Capture 4.0, I would suggest to either contact Nikon for a fresh installation code, or make sure you keep the old files around in case your computer crashes.

Thanks for the info. Will keep my old 4.0 disk around. I was just about to do a spring cleaning in the old computer graveyard, I mean room.

I had a similar problem and Nikon was very good to give me the code. They must have a record of your original purchase because I did not have anything other than my name.

been there done that...

I did the exact same thing. NC 4 from the disk would not start on Tiger and when I downloaded 4.2.1 from the web, I found that the code was reconfigured, so I had to call Nikon and get a replacement code for the 4.2.1 version. I couldn't find the receipt either, so I took a picture of the disk, book and code included with the disk and attached it to an email after about 6 emails of begging and groveling.

It was a bit of an ordeal but they finally responded with a new code. 4.2.1 works with no problems on Tiger.

Finally I got hold of Nikon tech support and the man told me I'd have to uninstall Capture in safe mode and then reinstall it with all the upgrades etc. Can't do it now because I"m transfering files from old computer to this new one...

It would have been too simple and easy for him to just give me the new code numbers. He said that sometimes with XP this happens and Capture won't take the code letters that are on the CD..

Has anyone else had this answer from Nikon..It just seems funny to me that some of you are getting the code over the phone and I"m getting all this 'rigamaroll'--

Best to you,

I had to install NC4 on my computer, do the upgrades to 4.13, then go in the safe mode to use my old unlock code, then do the final upgrade to 4.2 and it would work. Anything prior to 4.2 froze my computer once the Service Pak 2 was installed.

Hi Harris,

Thanks for your input... You and I must have talked with the same guy at Nikon Tech Support...they sure don't want to make it simple for us.

Here is a response from Nikon to one of my earlier email requests. it includes a phone number. I did everything suggested, but it still did not work. so I contacted them and was eventually given a replacement code.

Be prepared to meet with resistance. They are very pleasant but not exactly in touch with their customers needs. I think that public relations is still a weak point with Nikon. They seem to want to respond to customer needs, but they are so suspicious of security concerns that they alienate thier loyal paying customers. I understand, but it's too bad, and I am sad to say that this is the world we live in currently.

Hi Scott,

There's going to be a bit of trickery involved with getting Capture 4.2.1 on your Tiger system. First uninstall the version 4.2.1 that you downloaded and installed. Now install the Capture 4 CD that you purchased. Once it's installed, open it and validate it with your keycode. At this point, I'd like you to visit http://www.paceap.com and go to the Download > Drivers page. From there download the Pace Interlok Drivers for Mac OSX. If you're having a hard time downloading from there, try Ctrl-Clicking on the download link and choosing "Download Link to Drive". Open the .DMG file that you downloaded and run the installer.

Once finished, you can install the Capture 4.2.1 download which should update you to the proper version. If you have any other questions or comments, feel free to contact us any time. We are open 24 hours a day, and our phone number is 1-800-645-6689 (Option 1).

Hi Scott,
That's sure not what the man told me. I"ve got to do the 'safe mode' thing and then uninstall... hope it's not a fiasco...
I"ll let you all know what works as soon as I know..what a pain to have to do all this for a product we paid good money for...they've made it very difficult for folks like me

Good Grief!?! They are using Pace? I happen to be aware of Pace and use their iLock USB dongle which is necessary to run ProTools, a high-end audio editor, but for heaven's sake, this is just a RAW converter!

I hope I see no more complaints about Adobe's on-line actuation scheme, because its a piece of cake compared to Nikon's paranoia.
